Plastics Technology
Qualification awarded: Bachelor of Engineering, equivalent to Yrkeshögskoleexamen i teknik, Ingenjör (YH)
Scope: 240 ECTS credits
Duration: 4 years
Programme director: Mathew Vihtonen
The Plastics Technology programme trains Finnish and foreign students for careers as Engineers in Finnish and international companies. The programme focuses on the use of plastics in the production of products. Students will learn to work both independently and as members of multinational teams.
The student will come to understand the technical and economical considerations of the plastics industry. He/She will be able to select the best materials for the different plastic products and manufacturing processes. During the studies, knowledge concerning the structure, properties and application of plastics will be gained. Students will be able to select suitable plastics for different applications and manufacturing processes.
Students will produce plastic products with such processes as extrusion and injection moulding and understand the connection between operating parameters and output. The student will learn to use engineering software such as AutoCAD, Solid Edge, Mastercam, COMSOL and Moldflow in the design process.
One expanding part of the programme is composite engineering, concentrating on vacuum assisted lamination for glass/carbon and aramid fibres on all standard industrial core materials. 3D form planning and production is included as well as the strength testing of different laminates. This is closely related to the needs of Finnish industry.
